A Crash Course to Using Reddit for Your Marketing Campaign

Especially for those who aren’t regular denizens of the World Wide Web, Reddit can be an overwhelming and often misunderstood place. To the uninitiated, the self-titled “front page of the internet” may look like nothing more than a series of unrelated headlines, pictures, and calls to “submit a new link.” But to overlook the marketing treasure trove that is Reddit would be like if Indiana Jones caught sight of one snake and gave up on his quest to find the Lost Ark.

So, without any further ado, let’s get started with some Reddit basics. On the homepage, you’ll be brought to a real time feed of the most popular posts on site, spanning a massive variety of topics. You’ll also see a search bar, an explore tab, and an area to access your profile preferences. What you may have missed are those tiny words at the top of the page. These are a list of popular subreddits, which are pages organized by topics or themes; remember this, as they’ll soon become your best friend.

Subreddits are where we really get into the nitty gritty of using Reddit for marketing purposes. The wonderful thing about them is that they range from extremely broad categories–i.e. reddit.com/r/culinary–to extremely specific categories, like r/indianfood or r/cupcakes. Using this knowledge, you can very easily access up-to-date information on just about every topic under the sun, including those in your unique industry.

Once you’ve got the hang of searching for and subscribing to a variety of subreddits, take advantage of all these forums have to offer. Perform in-depth market research, share your unique content where it’s applicable, ask industry-specific questions to the general public, and seek out opportunities for giveaways. You can even create your own subreddit if you don’t see one dedicated to your topic–chances are there’s at least one other person in the world searching for the same thing.

Don’t let the little red-eyed Reddit alien make you think you’re in a foreign land when perusing the site. This much-frequented site is like a condensed version of the internet, giving you quicker and easier access to the information you need (and the information you didn’t know you needed).
